Cheltenham

CheltenhamThe historic town of Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire is on the fringe of the Cotswolds Hills and home to the famous Cheltenham Race course and diverse annual heritage festivals. The local Scout troops take advantage of the town’s proximity to the Cotswolds for pioneering hikes and activities.

Parents of youngsters or older boys interested in joining the local Cheltenham troop, Twyning Scouts, will find full details at twyningscouts.org.uk. Age limits for the different levels of scout are shown on the site. Boys can enrol anywhere from the age of six to 25. Six-year-olds begin in the beavers and then progress through cubs and scouts to the final level of explorer scout.

The scouting movement was begun by Robert Baden-Powell in the 1900s with the aim of allowing boys the chance of learning basic survival skills and of partaking in different activities. Today this basic tenet still applies to scout troops and patrols all over the world.
